Steve Carell would like to play an all-out evil baddie.
The star of comedies like Dinner For Schmucks and The 40-Year-Old Virgin lends his voice to Gru, who dreams of being the greatest villain of all time in the new 3D animation Despicable Me, and revealed how the film has inspired him to travel to darker depths in future roles.
"I'd like to play a guy who's truly reprehensible - an evil, bad guy and someone with a very dark heart," he said.
"For years, I've wanted to be a very, very mean person and finally I get to do it in this movie. Gru's a bad guy but it turns out he's actually pretty sweet at heart. As crazy as Gru sounds and as diabolical and mean and awful as he is, there's a humanity to him that comes out in little bits all the way through."
Steve spent hours trying to find the right voice for Gru.
"I spent a couple of recording sessions just playing around, trying to figure out what it would sound like and who Gru is," he recalled.
"I wanted it be sinister without being too threatening, because it's a family movie. I wanted him to have a bit of an edge. He's mean and needs some sort of redemption in his life."
