Statham hails new film's 'reality'

Jason Statham and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley arrive for the premiere of Hummingbird at the Odeon Leicester Square, central London

Snatch star Jason Statham and his model girlfriend Rosie Huntington-Whiteley put on a rare show of public affection at the world premiere of his new film Hummingbird.

The couple, who have been dating for about three years, laughed and smiled as they walked up the red carpet together at London's Leicester Square.

But the Derbyshire-born actor, 45, clammed up when asked about Rosie, who showed off her figure in an embellished Emilio Pucci corset-style mini-dress.

Asked if she likes his films, Jason said: "I don't know. You'd have to ask her."

Jason plays Joey Jones, a homeless ex-Special Forces soldier who strikes up an unlikely friendship with a nun -played by Polish actress Agata Buzek - in Hummingbird, which was written and directed by Steven Knight and opens June 28.

He reveals the role has made him more aware of the issues facing soldiers when they return from war.

Jason said actors "get educated on many subjects with all the films you do, but this one particularly, because it's rooted in reality".

The world of the homeless was one which people were not exposed to, he added. "It's really interesting and a privilege to go into that world. And to meet real soldiers too, as they are the real heroes."

Filmmaker Steven revealed David Fincher persuaded him to cast Jason in the role.

"I've always admired his work and thought he's got a great physical presence, but the ultimate clincher was David Fincher," he said. "When I decided to direct, I spoke to a lot of directors I'd worked with for advice and David Fincher no less said the only person he would cast in this role would be Jason Statham. I thought, 'He knows what he's talking about'."
