Steven Spielberg revealed he had wanted to direct a Bond film

Steven Spielberg has apparently revealed that he was turned down to direct a James Bond movie in the late 70s.

The award-winning director told The Daily Mail he was desperate to be at the helm of a film about the infamous spy, but was knocked back by the producers.

Spielberg said: "I went to Cubby Broccoli and I asked if I could do one and he said: 'No'."

He added: "I've never asked again. Instead, I made the Indiana Jones series."

But the Lincoln director is still a big 007 fan and thinks Sam Mendes has done a great job on the latest film Skyfall.

"I've seen it once and I'll see it a second time," he said.
