Andrew Garfield's turn as Spider-Man is eagerly anticipated

Andrew Garfield has climbed to the top to become the most buzzed-about star of 2011.

The Hollywood actor's highly anticipated turn as Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man has put him in the top spot of the annual SFX Hot 50 poll, overtaking sci-fi veterans Ridley Scott and Peter Jackson, who took second and third place respectively.

Joss Whedon - who is directing the forthcoming superhero fest The Avengers - is in fourth place, while The Dark Knight Rises filmmaker Christopher Nolan completes the top five.

Dave Bradley, SFX's editor-in-chief said: "With people from some of Hollywood's most anticipated films at the top of the list, the 2011 Hot 50 shows sci-fi and fantasy are bigger and more popular than ever before. Our Spidey-sense is telling us to expect great things from this year's number one Andrew Garfield."

The full Hot 50, which compiles the most buzzed-about stars in the sci-fi and fantasy universe, can be found in issue 215 of SFX, which is on sale now.
