The little blue hedgehog famous for his computer game starring role has already appeared in his own TV series and is now making the leap into film, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Sony is teaming up with Japan-based production company Marza Animation Planet, a division of the Sega Sammy Group, and producer Neal Moritz for the movie, which will be a live action and computer animated hybrid.

The story will follow the antics of the world's fastest hedgehog and will include well-known characters such as the evil Dr Eggman.

Columbia Pictures president of production Hannah Minghella said: "There are limitless stories to tell with a character like Sonic the Hedgehog and a built-in international fan base. Along with our wonderful creative partners at Marza, we're looking to capture everything that generations of fans know and love about Sonic while also growing his audience wider than ever before."

Marza CEO Masanao Maeda added: "Sonic has had dozens of adventures on the console and the small screen, and we're thrilled that he's now coming to the big screen.

"Sony Pictures has had great success with hybrid animated and live-action features, and we're confident that this collaboration will bring a fresh take to Sonic, while still capturing everything that the fans love about him."

Producer Neal is based at Sony and recently worked on 22 Jump Street, while the studio has so far released two Smurfs films that were live action/computer animation hybrids.

Writers Evan Susser and Van Robichaux are also working on a live action version of The Jetsons.
