Snyder: Superman the most 'unknown'
Zack Snyder plans to forget all previous Superman movies and wipe the slate clean with his new film.
The Sucker Punch director has cast Henry Cavill as Clark Kent in the new film, given the working title Man Of Steel, and told the Los Angeles Times he is planning a completely new incarnation of the superhero.
Zack said: "Literally, the one thing that everyone can start to think about is that we're making a movie that finally goes with the approach that there's been no other Superman movies."
But the filmmaker, who is working with Batman Begins director Christopher Nolan, who is a producing the project, vowed to "respect" the Superman canon.
He added: "If you look at Batman Begins, there's the canon that we know about and respect but on other hand there's this approach that pre-supposes that there haven't been any other movies.
"In every aspect of design and of story, the whole thing is very much from that perspective of respect the canon but don't be a slave to the movies."
He added: "Superman is the one constant in the universe.
"You know that if you do Superman right - or at least if you do him with respect - you know you end up with something great. That is virgin territory. In some ways Superman is the most recognisable superhero on the planet but also the most unknown. People have preconceived ideas about him but probably all of them are wrong."
Among those rumoured to be in talks to star alongside Henry as Superman and Diane Lane as his adoptive mother Martha are Kevin Costner, Viggo Mortensen, Rosamund Pike, Alice Eve and Diane Kruger.
All Zack would say on casting was: "There's more to come and I think it's consistent in its awesomeness."
