Will Smith is to play a judge in I Am Legend writer Akiva Goldsman's directorial debut Winter's Tale.

The A Beautiful Mind scriptwriter has reportedly "called in every favour he has" according to New York Times magazine's Vulture blog, and persuaded Will and Russell Crowe to appear in supporting roles.

A Beautiful Mind star Russell will play Pearly Soames, a gangster boss, while I Am Legend star Will appears as a judge.

The film - adapted from Mark Helprin's 1983 novel - tells the story of an orphaned Irish thief who falls in love with the dying girl who lives in the wealthy apartment he's just burgled.

Meanwhile, gangster boss Pearly is after his life.

Set in both nineteenth-century and present-day Manhattan, the tale also features a flying white horse and street gangs.

The multi-million dollar Warner Bros project is due to begin shooting in the autumn and the lead roles of the thief and the girl are still to be cast.
