Smith not in Independence Day 2

Will Smith wll not be returning for Indpendence Day 2

Will Smith will not be in the Independence Day sequel - because he is too big a name these days.

The Hollywood actor starred in the original 1996 film but director Roland Emmerich has said he will not be fighting aliens in the planned follow-up, which is due out in 2015, because it would be too costly.

He told the New York Daily News: "Will Smith can not come back because he's too expensive, but he'd also be too much of a marquee name.

"It would be too much."

It isn't yet known if any of the original cast, which also included Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman, will be in the sequel.

But the filmmaker suggested it was likely by saying: "We have like maybe half of the people that you would know from the first film (in the script) and the other half who are new."

Few details about the new film are known but it's thought it will be the first of a two-part story.

Roland didn't let any of the details slip, although he laughed: "I think some aliens will be back."

Independence Day 2 is due to be released on July 3, 2015.
