Stellan Skarsgard is reportedly in talks to join Kenneth Branagh's Cinderella remake.

The Swedish star is said to be in discussions to play the Grand Duke in the upcoming live-action adaptation of the classic fairytale, which will be directed by Kenneth, according to The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision blog.

Stellan's character is also the king's adviser, "who just may have ulterior motives".

Lily James is already set to portray Cinderella, with Game Of Thrones actor Richard Madden as her Prince Charming.

Cate Blanchett has been cast as the wicked stepmother, Helena Bonham Carter is the fairy godmother, while Downton Abbey actress Sophie McShera and Holliday Grainger are to play Cinderella's stepsisters.

Shooting on Cinderella is expected to begin in the autumn, for a release in spring 2015.

Stellan will next be seen in Carlo Carlei's Romeo And Juliet starring Hailee Steinfeld and Douglas Booth as the star-crossed lovers, and war drama The Railway Man alongside Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman.

The 62-year-old - the father of True Blood star Alexander - will also reprise his role as Dr Erik Selvig in the Thor sequel, The Dark World, and will reunite with Danish filmmaker Lars von Trier on Nymphomaniac, which also stars Charlotte Gainsbourg, Shia LaBeouf and Jamie Bell.
