Bryan Singer is set to direct the third film in the latest X-Men series.

The filmmaker, who is working on the second film Days Of Future Past, will head back behind the cameras for X-Men: Apocalypse, reported Vulture.

The 48-year-old previously teased the next instalment in the comic-book franchise when he tweeted: "#Xmen #Apocalypse 2016!"

It would mark Bryan's first back-to-back franchise venture since he started the big-screen adaptations with X-Men in 2000 and X2 in 2003.

Days Of Future Past, which features the original cast such as Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry and Sir Patrick Stewart with the newer generation including James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence, is expected to be "a direct sequel", leading straight into X-Men: Apocalypse and will focus on the younger cast.

Plot details about the third film are not know,n but fans are speculating that the film will be about a villain named Apocalypse, who has appeared in the X-Men comics.

X-Men: Days Of Future Past will be released in May 2014, while X-Men: Apocalypse will be in cinemas around May 2016.
