Shia LaBeouf is to star in action romance The Necessary Death Of Charlie Countryman.

The Transformers star - soon to be appearing in Cannes with the cast of Oliver Stone's Wall Street 2 - has signed up to play the title role, according to the Risky Business blog.

In the screenplay written by Matt Drake, Charlie Countryman travels to Budapest after his mother dies of cancer, and becomes entwined with a mysterious Hungarian girl named Gabi.

Unfortunately, she's already involved with a violent crime boss who isn't prepared to give her up.

The movie is to be directed by Dante Ariola for Mandate Pictures and is due to start shooting in the autumn.

Drake's original script was named on the unofficial 2007 Black List of most liked screenplays that year.

This will be the debut feature for Ariola, who has previously only directed commercials, winning the the DGA commercial director of the year designation in 2007.
