The Hugo filmmaker would like to get frequent leading man Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead role as the music legend, but admitted the film is still a work in progress.

"At this point I can't confirm anything. It's still a possibly," he said.

"We hope to try and come up at least with a screenplay as soon as possible. We've been trying."

Oscar-winner Martin, who has been making movies for the past 40 years, had filmmaking ideas since he was a teenager, but only realised they could come to fruition after he saw John Cassavetes' Shadows as a student.

"I was dabbling in ideas in making films, drawings and storyboards in the sense that I didn't realise what they were at the time. I couldn't afford a camera but at the time in the late 50s, when I was about 18, there was no possibility of making pictures at that time in New York, only independent cinema," he recalled.

"Hollywood was the place and you make films a certain way there. I saw John Cassavetes' Shadows and realised that a certain kind of picture could be made, and I can take what I know from people around me - the people on the street and my family - and put it on screen. And then I was making a movie!" he added.

:: Hugo opens in cinemas on December 2.
