Sam Mendes is to direct Kevin Spacey for the first time since their Oscar-winning American Beauty.
Spacey - also artistic director of London's Old Vic theatre - will star in the title role of a staging of Richard III.
The production, directed by acclaimed British director Mendes, will be part of the final season of their transatlantic Bridge Project. It will be performed at the Old Vic and New York's BAM, as well as touring internationally.
Spacey said: "Sam is one of the finest directors I have had the pleasure to work with and to gain this opportunity is beyond my wildest hopes. I love Sam's perspective on a role, carving and shaping the actor. With such a remarkable character before me I have a feeling this one is going to be a memorable experience."
Mendes said: "I am absolutely delighted to be working with Kevin again for the first time since American Beauty, and I am doubly thrilled that he will be leading year three of the Bridge Project. Richard III is a play I love, and a role I think Kevin is born to play."
The Bridge Project has been a long-term collaboration which has seen plays transferring between London and the US, featuring eminent actors.
The brainchild of Mendes, it has created a number of classical productions with the third season - featuring Spacey's Richard III - to be performed in 2012.
They became the toast of the movie world when they worked together on American Beauty, establishing both as major figures in their fields.
Tickets will go on sale next year for the show, which will launch at BAM in February 2012, moving to London three months later.
