The American Hustle director said that rather than shooting from further away he likes to get as near to his actors as he can to film their emotions with a hand-held camera, reported the Daily Mail.

David said on The Daily Show: "I like to be very close to my actors. I don't like to be sat in what they call video village, which is often 100 yards or more away from the set.

'I like to be close to them. I like them to feel me and me to feel them. I like to shoot with a small camera so I can be there."

A photo shows the award-winning filmmaker shooting a scene with Jennifer Lawrence and Jack Huston, in which the actors are sitting in the front of the car and David is crammed into the back, lying down with a camera in his hand.

He said his stars, such as Hunger Games actress Jennifer, tend to adapt to his style.

"Jennifer got used to it, she liked it a lot," he said.

But show host Jon Stewart teased: 'You look like you are chaperoning a terrible date. You are the director and you look like they are smuggling you into Tijuana."
