Eli Roth says The Last Exorcism's script was so "original" he immediately knew he had to make the movie.
"For someone who has read many scripts it's really hard to keep me guessing," the Hollywood director-actor-producer explained.
"I love scary movies but this script was truly one of the best, smartest, most original scripts I've ever read," he said at the film's LA premiere.
Eli revealed he had wanted to sign on as a producer as soon as he'd read the story. "It was so fun and it really kept me guessing. I had no idea where it was going. Every time there was a new twist I was like 'Oh my god I didn't see that coming!'," he said.
The filmmaker insists he enjoys being able to keep some variety in his career. "I get different satisfaction from everything," he insisted.
"When I'm a director, obviously it's the most satisfying feeling because you have an idea in your head and you share it with the rest of the world.
"You can do the same thing as a producer, have other ideas and get your creativity out there. You also get the satisfaction of helping launch the careers of terrific actors.
"From acting you get the thrill of embodying the fantasies of the people that see you."
The horror expert revealed how he's next planning on switching genres.
"I'm actually working on a science fiction film to direct," Eli revealed.
