Robert Downey Jr asks forgiveness for Mel Gibson
At an awards ceremony in Los Angeles, Robert Downey Jr pays tribute to Mel Gibson and asks Hollywood to forgive the actor for his controversial outburts
Robert Downey Jr appeared at the 25th American Cinematheque awards on Friday, where Mel Gibson presented him with an award celebrating his life's work.
As Gibson stood in the wings, Downey Jr told the audience that he credits the fallen star with giving him support and advice to help get his own career back on track after he suffered a very public downfall with drugs.
"I humbly ask that you join me, unless you are completely without sin, and in which case you picked the wrong ------- industry, in forgiving my friend of his trespasses and offering him the same clean slate that you have me and allowing him to continue his great and on-going contribution to our collective art without shame," said Downey Jr.
After his speech, Downey Jr and Gibson hugged on stage.
Gibson fell from grace after making a series of anti-Semitic statements following his arrest for drink driving in 2006. He also pled 'no contest' to a charge of spousal battery, related to an incident with his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva.
