Joely Richardson has joined the cast of thriller The Messenger.

The Tudors and Nip/Tuck star will star alongside Robert Sheehan, Jack Fox and Lily Cole in the film, as a psychiatrist.

Producer Terry Stone said: "We are absolutely thrilled to have an actress of Joely's talent and integrity attached to our project. She makes a fantastic addition to an already incredible cast."

The 49-year-old actress, best known for her roles in Thanks For Sharing, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and The Patriot, will next be seen in post-apocalyptic horror Maggie alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger and Abigail Breslin, and romantic drama The Fallen with Jeremy Irvine.

The Messenger, which has begun shooting, follows a young man who can communicate with the dead. He unwillingly becomes embroiled in the relationship between a murdered journalist and his TV presenter wife.
