Richard E Grant is planning to direct a spoof Western set in England.

The Withnail And I star is keeping his cast a secret and is working on attracting financiers to his new British independent project.

Grant revealed: "I directed a film about my childhood called Wah-Wah four years ago and I'm now working in pre-production for a spoof Western which is Blazing Saddles meets Hot Fuzz set in west Sussex in 1870 so its a Western set in England."

Meanwhile, the actor is currently filming new comedy drama Foster in London with Toni Collette, Ioan Gruffudd, Anne Reid and Hayley Mills.

He revealed: "I'm playing a tramp. An old guy with a big beard so I look like Charles Dickens until I get cleaned up."

Grant will next appear in operatic drama Cosi, which co-stars Sarah Brightman.

He revealed: "I play an amateur who's a very rich businessman, who has a private passion for opera and pays for Mozart's Cosi Fan Tutte piece to be staged in a big private castle in Scotland and what happens in the plot of the opera is mirrored by what is going on amongst all the singers so it's a romantic comedy."

But he won't be debuting his singing talents.

He confessed: "Mercifully I'm dubbed."

:: Grant presents The History of Safari on BBC Four at 9pm on Monday April 26.
