The Kiwi actor will star opposite Happy Go Lucky's Sally Hawkins in comedy Love Birds, Deadline Hollywood reports.

Rhys - known for playing The Conchords' hapless band manager Murray Hewitt - will play somebody nursing a wild bird back to health after his girlfriend dumps him, who then meets a kooky vet, played by Sally.

The movie, directed by New Zealander Paul Murphy and written by Nick Ward, will be shooting in Auckland until mid-May.

Rhys has previously appeared in comedy films Yes Man and The Boat That Rocked.
