Ryan Reynolds has revealed how his pets have their own personalities.
In The Voices, which also stars Gemma Arterton and Anna Kendrick, the Canadian heartthrob plays Jerry Hickfang, who has hallucinations about his pets. The actor, who is married to Blake Lively, admitted how he imagines the couple's dogs to have their own voices in real life.
"I have two dogs and they have voices like everyone's dog or cat does. We all sort of assign a voice or a kind of personality to the dog once they grow into their own," he said.
"My wife and I share two dogs and we're crazy about them, neither of which condone homicide though," he added.
Ryan, who has starred in Green Lantern, The Proposal and Safe House, had to persuade director Marjane Satrapi to cast him in the lead role.
"It was something that I chased and really wanted to do. So I had to go meet Marjane and try to win her over," he said.
"It was a hard fought for win but it was also a labour of love. I was such a fan of her work. I really do think she's put some unusual art into the world. It was an exceptional experience."
Having experienced his share of big-budget blockbusters, Ryan was more than happy to go down the indie route with The Voices, which had its UK premiere at Sundance London.
"Independent films are the most fun. It's a privilege to be able to do. You have the most freedom, you're around the most impressively talented group of people and there isn't really an investment in the outcome the way there is in the studio system," he explained.
"When you're in an environment like that, you feel safe to really explore, drop all vanity and have fun."
