Chris Pine has said he thinks the reason why fans like Jack Ryan so much is because he is just an ordinary man who finds himself in an extraordinary situation.
The Star Trek actor is the latest star to take on the role of Jack Ryan, created by novelist Tom Clancy, who has already been played by Ben Affleck, Harrison Ford and Alec Baldwin. He was joined at the Los Angeles premiere of prequel film Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit by co-stars Keira Knightley and Kevin Costner and director Kenneth Branagh.
Chris said of the young CIA agent: "It's not James Bond who's got the flash suits, the fast cars, the bevy of beautiful women and Q with all the fancy gadgets.
"This is a real man trying to figure out how to survive, trying to figure out how to save the woman of his life. He's very much like any one of us in a really extraordinary situation."
Keira, who stars as Jack's fiancee Cathy Muller, said she had loved the experience of working with Branagh, who also appears in the film as the villain, as well as directing.
She said: "He's been a big hero of mine since I was a kid and I've never worked with an actor/director before, so I was really interested to see how exactly that worked.
"I still have no idea how he does it. The scenes between him and me, being directed and acting with the same person, was totally fascinating."
Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit is released in cinemas on January 24.
