The Magic Mike star is set to be screen-tested for the coveted male lead in Divergent, the first film in a trilogy that is seen as a possible successor to the Twilight and Hunger Games franchises, reported Variety.
X-Men: First Class's Lucas Till and War Horse's Jeremy Irvine will also test for the role.
The film is based on a young adult novel by Veronica Roth which involves "teen-on-teen violence in a futuristic setting", where society is divided into factions based on human traits.
The Descendants actress Shailene Woodley has already bagged the female lead as 16-year-old Beatrice Prior, who leaves her group to join a rival faction, but the hunt is still on for her male co-star.
Brenton Thwaites, Luke Bracey and Jack Reynor were tested for the part last year.
Lucas has also been tested before, but Alex and Jeremy are newcomers to the list of contenders.
Divergent will be directed by Neil Burger.
