Our Family Wedding (12A, general release)
A cartoonish and contrived comedy, Rick Famuyiwa's Our Family Wedding has such a blandly unoriginal pretext that the prospect of it is hard to stomach. A young couple from different ethnic backgrounds endeavour to overcome the old-fashioned prejudices of their parents. It's like Guess Who's Coming to Dinner on crack.
Bradford Boyd (Forest Whitaker) is a middle-aged ladies' man and radio celebrity, and an implacable cynic when it comes to marriage. Miguel Ramirez (Carlos Mencia) is a conservative Mexican family man. These two clots will clash in a big way and seriously jeapordise the happiness of their children (America Ferrera and Marcus Boyd).
Ferrera's charm is as winning as ever and Forest Whitaker isn't that bad at comedy. But this is weary stuff, and the actors struggle against a tide of platitudes.
