Mel Gibson has won an unlikely ally in Oliver Stone.

The Oscar-winning filmmaker thinks Hollywood will soon forgive the Mad Max star, who is facing allegations of abuse from Russian ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva, and his career won't come to any harm.

"Everyone is supposed to have an opinion [about Gibson], but most directors don't work that way," Oliver said at the UK premiere of his latest film, South Of The Border.

Oliver said press criticism of an actor is immediate, whereas Tinseltown tends to work on a longer time scale.

"These questions are hard to say... Projects are developed slowly and over the course of the next few weeks, months, there'll be projects and I'm sure many of them will want to have Mel Gibson in the movie," he added.

:: South Of The Border is released from July 30.
