The 30-year-old - who makes her Hollywood debut in Steve McQueen's pre-Civil War drama as a slave called Patsey alongside Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender and Chiwetel Ejiofor - admitted she still has to pinch herself over her rising fame.

"I'm still trying to get over the fact that my name is being mentioned with people like Brad Pitt. Honestly," she told People.

She added: "When I was cast in his film, [I thought] surely I was going to meet him one day. I wouldn't say I was starstruck. I was stunned. I was like, 'Yup, this is actually happening'."

Lupita revealed that shooting 12 Years A Slave, which is hotly tipped to be an Oscar contender for best film, was quite a surreal experience.

"It feels wonderful. A lot of the time it feels quite magical and I feel it's like an out-of-body experience," she added.

Director Steve and his leading man Chiwetel will walk the red carpet at the film's UK premiere at the 57th BFI London Film Festival tonight (October 18).
