Team Ireland are back in top form. After the disappointment of Norway, they travelled to London last weekend and coasted into the final of the British team championship for the Crockfords Cup - literally annihilating all the teams they met in this, the top team event in Britain. The final is scheduled for London early next month.
And here is more good news. Two Blackrock lads, Michael Donnelly and Stephen Barr, won the junior section of the Baltic Congress Pairs in Poland. And that takes some doing I can tell you. Well, I was right. Ballybunion is no more. Instead we have the new North Kerry Congress at the splendid Meadowlands Hotel, Tralee from Aug 28 to 30. Usual programme with an extended team of four to finish. For information call Nicky Fitzgibbon at (066) 7185471 or Trish Stack at (087) 6254284.
The value of voids and singletons can never be underestimated. How many pairs got to an unbeatable Grand Slam on this hand. None is the answer.

Anyway tough to get to a Grand Slam when both opponents are bidding. But N has no way of knowing about the D void, so can't be blamed. If E mentions the 6-carder, now S can show a void, but it did not happen. Would you open 1C on the S hand. I think so, but is it good enough to reverse. A tough problem to solve.
