Lindsay Lohan's casting in upcoming gangster film Gotti: Three Generations has not been "definitively" decided, director Barry Levinson has revealed.

The actress was sentenced to 120 days in jail and community service yesterday (Thursday) after her lawyer entered a no contest plea in a case involving the theft of a necklace.

Levinson, who won an best director Oscar for Rain Man, said he had been too busy writing the film, which is based on the Gotti mafia family from New York, to decide all the details.

He said: "I didn't say definitively ... someone said to me about Lindsay Lohan and I said, to be honest with you right now, I'm sort of so busy that I have to go sit down and write the piece, and I know her name has been mentioned in relationship to it but right now my focus is trying to just simply write it as opposed to dealing with the specifics of her and the role."

But the film-maker has no worries about John Travolta who is set to play syndicate boss John Gotti Sr.

He said: "I think he has a stature because Gotti Sr had that very strong presence and I think that will be very easy for him. Not that the role is easy but you can see how he can make that transformation."

Gotti, who was known as the Teflon Don because the police struggled to make charges stick, eventually ended up dying in prison in 2002 while serving a life sentence for murder and racketeering.
