Nicholas Hoult was unperturbed by his racy scenes in A Single Man because he said he was already "broken in" by Skins.

The 20-year-old plays student Kenny Potter in Tom Ford's directorial debut, where he strips off to go skinny-dipping in one scene.

"You could say, I was broken in by Skins - when you're doing those types of scenes, it's not uncomfortable at the time when you're the character playing the part and there's a reason to do it, [but] it's always awkward afterwards when they say 'Cut' and you're left there," he said.

Nicholas - who's received a nod for the Orange Bafta Rising Star Award - praised co-star Colin Firth for his professionalism.

"Colin was fantastic to work with. He's very relaxed and calming on set and we had fun, he made me feel very comfortable," he said.

"But also, Tom was very clear on what was happening in the story and it wasn't there for the sake of it," he added.

The waters of the Pacific Ocean were "freezing" but they finished in three takes. "The first time, it's quite liberating and you feel quite invigorated and alive afterwards, but when they ask you to do it again, you don't want to go back in because it's cold," Nicholas said.

"Colin's wig fell off in take three and was floating in the Pacific. And I got ash in my eye because there were fires, and I couldn't get it out."

:: A Single Man will be released on February 12.
