Murphy for Beverly Hills Cop reboot
Eddie Murphy is set to return as wise-cracking detective Axel Foley in a reboot of comedy franchise Beverly Hills Cop.
Paramount Pictures has announced the new film is expected to hit cinemas in 2016, directed by Rush Hour's Brett Ratner.
Beverly Hills Cop was originally released in 1984, starring Eddie as Foley, a Detroit cop working in Beverly Hills. The hit comedy became one of the biggest franchises of the 80s and Eddie reprised the role in two sequels.
Paramount said in their release the new film will follow Foley "who has been living a cushy life as a Beverly Hills detective, back to the mean streets of Detroit during the coldest winter on record to navigate the new rules and old enemies in America's toughest city".
A television spin-of, set to star Brandon T Jackson and feature guest appearances from Eddie, had been in production, but CBS dropped the project after just one pilot episode.
Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the original movie and has just sign ed a long-term deal with Paramount Pictures, will also return to the new movie. The screenplay is to be penned by Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec, who recently worked on the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie.
The official release date is March 25, 2016.
