Although classics like Halloween and The Exorcist feature in the Top 10, it's Wes Craven's Scream which bagged the most votes.

Craven reinvented the horror genre with the 1996 slasher hit which starred Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette.

The other film for which the late horror director is probably best known is A Nightmare on Elm Street and it reached number 7 in the poll conducted by Spin1038.com.

Of the 1000 people surveyed, 16% voted for Scream with The Conjuring coming a close second and The Shining, starring Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall, third.

Horror director James Wan made quite an impact on the top 10 with The Conjuring, Insidious, and Saw hitting second, sixth and tenth place respectively.
