It's probably one of the more bizarre statements a film company has felt compelled to release, but Fox has stated that there "is clearly no rape scene with a bear" in The Revenant.

The statement, issued by a Fox spokesperson to EW, comes in the wake of internet rumours about a scene involving Leonardo DiCaprio and a bear in the upcoming film.

DiCaprio plays frontiersman Hugh Glass who is left for dead by his friends and colleagues after he's mauled by a bear.

The bear attack is brutal and a report on Drudge Report by one early viewer of the movie stated that "The bear flips Leo ove rand thrusts and thrusts during the explicit mauling.  He is raped - twice!".

Another viewer said, "the bear flips Glass over on his belly and molests him - dry humps him actually."

Not so, say Fox, "The bear in the film is a female who attacks [DiCaprio] because she feels he might be threatening her cubs ... there is clearly no rape scene with a bear."

The film, directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, is certainly brutal and pushed DiCaprio to his limits - he slept inside an animal carcass and ate raw bison for hte role.

However, apparently he drew the line at being raped by a bear.
