The reviews are in and Irish actress Ruth Negga is pretty much a lock in for an Oscar nomination.
The Limerick actress has been collecting rave reviews for her performance in Loving, which sees her take the lead role alongside Australian actor Joel Edgerton.
The Academy Awards don't take place until March, but Negga has already been tipped for an Oscar nomination thanks to her stellar performance.
The film follows an interracial married couple, Richard and Mildred Loving, who are arrested because in 1958 Virginia, interracial marriage is a crime.
Directed by Jeff Nichols, Loving was inspired by Nancy Buirski’s 2011 HBO documentary The Loving Story which consisted of footage of the couple and contemporary interviews with Peggy Loving, their daughter.
Loving is set to be released in the US on November 4th, and critics have had nothing but high praise for the 33-year-old Ethiopian-Irish actress.
"Joel Edgerton as Richard and Ruth Negga as Mildred give performances that will be talked about for years," writes The Rolling Stone.
"Negga, a breakout from AMC’s Preacher, is an instant awards contender. As Mildred, she fuels much of the film’s emotion, sitting in jail pregnant, dealing with relatives divided on whether her love is worth being in quasi-exile, and needing to return to farm life for the good of her kids. Negga gives her vulnerability but also strength of heart," applauds USA Today.
Negga, who previously starred in season one of RTE gangland drama Love/Hate, has also featured in 12 Years A Slave, World War Z, the Jimi Hendrix biopic Jimi: All Is By My Side and has a recurring role on Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Earlier this year, Carlow actress Saoirse Ronan was nominated for Best Actress in the Academy Awards for her role in Brooklyn, while Dublin author Emma Donoghue was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay for Room.
