The Inbetweeners: Top 6 cringeworthy moments from the series
Published 19/06/2014 | 17:12
The follow-up to the massively successful The Inbetweeners Movie reunites the hapless Jay, Neil, Simon & Will in Australia.
Award-winning E4 sitcom The Inbetweeners ran for just three series from 2008-2010, yet the first big screen outing set a new record for the most successful opening weekend ever achieved by a comedy film in the UK.
The film went on to rake in a healthy £45m at the UK box office. No wonder then that a sequel is in the offing with the schoolboy foursome (played by Simon Bird, James Buckley, Blake Harrison and Joe Thomas) transplanted to Oz on a gap year.
There they negotiate the Gold Coast in their car, which they lovingly refer to as a 'mobile virgin conversion unit,' and so the tone is set.
The trailer for The Inbetweeners 2: The Long Goodbye has just been released and looks set to deliver more classic moments of face-crunching cringe to add to the six we've chosen below. Be warned, the footage contains adult content and expletives.
The Inbetweeners Movie 2 will be released in the UK and Ireland on 6 August 2014.
(1) The Fashion Show
Simon takes to the student fashion show catwalk in a top hat and Speedos, unaware that part of his tackle is hanging out in full view of a horrified audience. What makes this scene even more eye-squintingly awful is the knowledge that those reactions were real - the audience of extras were not told in advance that actor Joe Thomas would be exposing himself. Apparently Joe declined to use a prosthetic.
(2) Thorpe Park
Simon passes his driving test but his joy is short-lived when his father presents him with the gift of a bright yellow Fiat Cinquecento Hawaii. When the lads finally arrive at Thorpe Park, Neil manages to pull a door off the car, which Simon is then forced to carry around all day. The series of relentless mishaps culminates in Will unwitting insulting a group from a charity for people with Down Syndrome as he queues for a rollercoaster.
(3) Bunk Off
One of the first scenes to prompt water cooler discussions was the one in which Simon's binge drinking results in him being sick over love interest Carly's little brother.
(4) The Inbetweeners Movie (dance scene)
The lads are on holiday in Crete when Neil, sporting his mudslide facial fake tan mishap, launches into a dance routine to impress a group of girls. Physical comedy at its best.
(5) A Night Out in London
The foursome head for London in Simon's micro car. Jay shouts "bus w*****s" at people standing at a bus stop from the perceived safety of Simon's Cinquecento but is forced to grovel to an irate aforementioned bus w***** when the car is forced to stop at a red light just metres away.
(6) Football Friend
At a party a guy says goodbye to Jay and Jay gives him two thumbs up in return. Neil, Simon, and Will don't know him and rib Simon with chants of "Ooooh friend!" and "Football friend", terms which are now part of the common lexicon.
