Star Wars cast praise Skellig’s ‘indescribable’ beauty
The cast and crew of ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ have praised the “indescribable beauty” of Skellig Michael.
Tourism Ireland have released a behind-the-scenes film in which the cast talk about filming on the island.
Daisy Ridley, who plays heroine Rey, said: “It literally looks like a rock that has come out of the sea. It was unbelievable”.
Mark Hamill who plays Jedi warrior Luke Skywalker added: “It’s just indescribably beautiful”. Director JJ Abrams, describes the ancient monastic site as “a miracle.”
Abrams has previously said he “could not believe” he was allowed to shoot at the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Tourism Ireland’s Star Wars campaign, with a budget of €110,000, capitalises on the Irish locations seen in ‘Episode VII: The Force Awakens’.
The next instalment in the blockbuster franchise is being shot along the Wild Atlantic Way.
“Ireland has become an important part of ‘Star Wars’ history,” said Candice Campos, Vice President of Physical Production at Lucasfilm.
Up to 35pc of tourists are influenced in their choice of destination by what they see on screen, according to Tourism Ireland, which has also developed extensive campaigns around the filming of ‘Game of Thrones’ in Northern Ireland.
“To have our phenomenal landscape feature so prominently in it filled Irish hearts with pride,” Minister for Tourism Paschal Donohoe TD said.
