Irish actress Saoirse Ronan is set to star in immigrant drama Sweetness in the Belly.

The Carlow-born actress will reunite with the Irish producers of Oscar-nominated Brooklyn for the film.

Sweetness in the Belly is based on the best-selling Camilla Gibb novel of the same name and will be shopped to buyers at the upcoming Berlin Film Festival.

Two-time Oscar nominee Ronan will play Lily, a young woman who was orphaned in Africa as a child and travels to her late parents'  homeland of England as a refugee to escape civil war.

The film will be co-produced by Parallel Films, the Dublin company behind Brooklyn, reports Deadline.

Zeresenay Berhane Mehari will direct the film, with the screenplay by Laura Phillips.

Ronan (22) was nominated for her first Oscar for Atonement at just 13 years old, and has several projects in the pipeline for 2017, including Loving Vincent, a unique painted film about Vincent van Gogh.
