The character was made legend by Jeff Bridges in the Coen Brothers classic flick, The Big Lebowski, but the Irish actor gave him a run for his money during the event in Montreal this weekend.

He was supported by Jennifer Lawrence in Julianne Moore's original role and Patton Oswalt in John Goodman's with Olivia Munn playing Bunny and Dennis Quaid made a surprise appearance in the latest live read organised by director Jason Reitman.

The reads have become legendary since they started in 2011 and Fassbender, decked out in shorts and a bathrobe, has been garnering rave reviews for his performance.

He's not known for comedy but even managed to sing a few lines of Kenny Rogers' 'Just Dropped In'.

Fassbender has been on the promotion trail with Lawrence for X Men: Apocalypse.

The actor's co-star Oswalt, who is a comedian and writer, joked that the Macbeth star was perhaps taking the role just a little too seriously.

"I think Fassbender went a little too method on this one. I hope TMZ isn't here," he joked.

The event was part of the Just For Laughs comedy festival in the Canadian city, where the latest X-Men instalment is currently being filmed.
