It has been a spectacular year for Disney with Frozen earning more than €515m worldwide, and rising, since its release in November last year.

And now it's even better news as Maleficent has already crossed the $600m mark after only its fifth week release.

It's the fourth movie - and the first non-comic book movie - of the year to hit the milestone figure.

It's also the most successful live-action film of Angelina Jolie's career, surpassing Mr And Mrs Smith, which took in $478 million in 2005.

She plays the titular character derived from the classic tale of Sleeping Beauty with Elle Fanning, Sharlto Copely, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple and Miranda Richardson also starring

Maleficent has grossed $205 million domestically and $400 million worldwide and it opens in Japan this weekend which will further increase takings.

Maleficent joins Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and X-Men: Days of Future Past in the list of movies grossing more than €600m this year.

Maleficent also raced past Disney's live-action fairytale Oz: The Great And Powerful, which has grossed $493 million US dollars worldwide.
