The LA Confidential actress (62) will tackle the role of S&M loving billionaire Christian Grey's older ex-lover in the sequel to last year's hit Fifty Shades of Grey.

Despite being panned by critics the film grossed more than €569m worldwide following its release over Valentine's weekend.

Grey is played by 33-year-old Northern Irish actor Jamie Dornan in the big screen adaptation of the best-selling books by EL James.

Production on the movie kicks off in the Spring with Dakota Johnson returning as Christian's love interest Anastasia Steele.

Also returning for the steamy sequel are Luke Grimes, Eloise Mumford and Max Martini.

It hasn't been the smoothest transition from the first film to the sequel as clashes between writer EL James and director Sam Taylor-Johnson led to Taylor-Johnson departing the franchise.

Glengarry Glen Ross director James Foley is reportedly the front runner to direct the sequel.

The second instalment in the series has been written by EL James' husband and novelist and screenwriter Niall Leonard.
