Irish director Jim Sheridan predicts that Saoirse Ronan will miss out on an Oscar for her performance in Brooklyn.

Sheridan is convinced the nomination for Best Actress will go to Brie Larson for her performance in Lenny Abrahamson's Room.

The six-time Oscar nominee is not convinced the 21-year-old's performance for the movie Brooklyn is "showy" enough for the Academy Awards.

“The movie Saoirse is in is a beautiful tone poem, an original book beautifully written and the adaptation is superb," he told the Irish Mirror.

It’s not the type of showy performance that usually the Academy reward.

“But professionals within the business know how difficult it is to keep that even keel and keep the audience interested. It’s a genius performance.

He believes Brie Larson, who won a Golden Globe on Sunday, will win for her "more dramatic role".

However, the My Left Foot director said to Ireland AM that the Carlow native was the best actress in Ireland and probably ”the best actress we’ve ever seen”.
