Irish actress Ruth Negga has landed an Oscar nomination for Best Actress.

The hotly-tipped Limerick native secured her first Academy Award nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role for her role in Loving, in which she stars as one half of an interracial couple who break the law by getting married in 1960s Virginia.

Joel Edgerton stars as her husband Richard in the film adaptation of a true story.

Isabelle Huppert (Elle), Natalie Portman (Jackie), Emma Stone (La La Land) and Meryl Streep (Florence Foster Jenkins) were also nominated.

In a successful day for Irish film, Irish-funded The Lobster, staring Colin Farrell, secured Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay, while Dubliner Consolta Boyle landed an Oscar nomination for Best Costume Design.
