Famous actors are known for taking props from film sets, with Julie Andrews recently admitting she took her shoes from Mary Poppins.

However, while Domhnall Gleeson admits he "thought about" taking a light sabre from the set of the new Star Wars flick, the Dubliner realised it wasn't a good idea.

The 31-year-old plays General Hux in Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens, which is set to be released next month.

The highly anticipated blockbuster is directed by JJ Abrahams, and Domhnall didn't want to cause a scene by stealing one of the most important props after seeing a similar drama on the set of Harry Potter.

"I thought about it, but all I could remember was one day leaving the Harry Potter set and noticing this massive tailback on the motorway - all because a wand had gone missing," he said. "They'd stopped traffic. You don't want to be that guy." 2015-11-13_new_14551261_I2.JPG

The Malahide native also said it would have been "daffy" not to take the role in one of the biggest movies of the year.

"My instinct was 'I'll regret not doing this if I don't do it'," he said. "And it's always better to do something and take away an experience than not do it and regret not doing it.

"And at the end of the day, the things I was excited about working on, the characters, the story, working with JJ, the universe that was already created…that was too much to say no, that would have been daffy," he added.

He also said he doesn't let his success overwhelm him after being attached to a number of blockbuster film franchises.

"I'd had experience of populating an exceptionally popular world with Harry Potter; you get excited and very nervous, but you have to leave that aside," he told Esquire UK.

His dad, Brendan Gleeson, is one of Ireland's biggest acting exports, but Domhnall said he never felt constrained by having a famous father.

"I've never felt penned in by that," he said. "I'm proud of my father and his work, so I'm happy whenever anybody associates us. I feel very lucky."

Over the past few years Domhnall has worked with huge Hollywood stars like Angelina Jolie and Leonardo DiCaprio and he said working with them put him under pressure "to be better".

"I've been very lucky in the last few years to work with people who are great at what they do, like real heroes of mine, so that feels good," he said.
