Rose McGowan has defended Renee Zellweger after a journalist took aim at the Bridget Jones star’s alleged surgery.

Renee caused a stir in 2014 when she stepped out looking markedly different to her former self. The Oscar-winner had flown under the radar after taking a Hollywood hiatus from 2010, and fans were left shocked when the star appeared at Elle Magazine 21st Annual Women in Hollywood event with a transformed look.

Her appearance is still the subject of conversation, with Variety film critic Owen Gleiberman penning a recent article titled ‘If She No Longer Looks Like Herself Has She Become a Different Actress?’ The piece has not gone down well with Rose, who has hit back at Owen with an essay of her own.

“Renee Zellweger is a human being, with feelings, with a life, with love and with triumphs and struggles, just like the rest of us. How dare you use her as a punching bag in your mistaken attempt to make a mark at your new job,” she fumed in The Hollywood Reporter.

“How dare you bully a woman who has done nothing but try to entertain people like you. Her crime, according to you, is growing older in a way you don’t approve of. Who are you to approve of anything? What you are doing is vile, damaging, stupid and cruel. It also reeks of status quo white-male privilege.”

She goes on accuse the journalist of being “an active endorser” of harassment and abuse of actresses and women.

Revealing her own experiences, 42-year-old Rose recalled a time she was “forced by a studio” to go on Howard Stern’s show, where the shock jock asked her to show him her genitals.

“I speak as someone who was abused by Hollywood and by people like you in the media, but I’m a different breed, one they didn't count on. I refuse and reject this bulls**t on behalf of those who feel they can't speak,” she vented.
