Harrison Ford will return to the role of archaeologist Indiana Jones at the age of 77.
The actor, who first starred as the intrepid explorer in 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' in 1981, will star in the fifth instalment of the action/adventure series, due for release in July 2019.
Disney and Lucasfilm confirmed that director Steven Spielberg has also signed up for the sequel.
"Steven Spielberg, who directed all four previous films, will helm the as-yet-untitled project with star Harrison Ford reprising his iconic role," said a Disney statement.
Alan Horn, chairman of Walt Disney Studios, said: "Indiana Jones is one of the greatest heroes in cinematic history, and we can't wait to bring him back to the screen in 2019.
"It's rare to have such a perfect combination of director, producers and actor, and we couldn't be more excited to embark on this adventure with Harrison and Steven."
The successful franchise has brought in €1.8bn at the global box office.
