A man with a passing resemblance to Hollywood actor Jim Carrey managed to fool organisers of the Czech film awards and make it on to the stage for the show opening.

The Cesky Lev (The Czech Lions) awards were held in Prague the night before the Oscars and viewers were surprised to see an obvious impostor on stage.

The following day, despite fans insisting the man was not Jim Carrey, the Czech Film and Television Academy (CFTA) members continued to insist he was indeed the Hollywood star.

Speaking to the Blesk Prague newspaper, award host Lucie Vyborna said, "Of course the real Jim Carrey was on the stage. I knew that he would come but I did not know what he would do there.”

However, the CFTA later issued a statement saying they had been "the victims of an elaborate hoax".

They revealed that the man had turned up with an interpreter and security so they had assumed he was legitimate.  They also revealed he had not been paid for the appearance.

The real Jim Carrey later tweeted about the incident, saying "MY SPIRIT WILL NOT BE IGNORED".
