The City Council confirmed the news yesterday but last night the landmark officially lit up and it looked magical.

The Force was alive in Dublin as locals and tourists gathered around the Spire to take pictures of the glowing monument and shared them on social media.

Dublin City Council say the Spire will be lit up until January 2.

A spokesperson told UTV Ireland: “We feel that it is an extremely creative idea and a strong animation of the Spire and will serve as an attraction to O’Connell Street at this festive time of year."

Early screenings of the highly anticipated next instalment in the sci-fi series kicked off at midnight on Wednesday with the film opening today across Ireland and the UK prior to the US release on Friday.
