Daniel Craig really does play a stormtrooper in Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Despite his vehement denials, the James Bond actor is indeed in JJ Abrams' Star Wars sequel - albeit under white body armour.
**WARNING: MILD SPOILERS***
t might be less elegant than the suave suits he’s used to wearing as James Bond, but Daniel Craig donned a stormtrooper outfit for a small role in The Force Awakens.
Earlier this year, it was reported that the Bond actor had asked for a cameo in the latest Star Wars film.
Simon Pegg, who has a small role as an alien in The Force Awakens, said at the London premiere for Man Up that Craig would be playing a stormtrooper.
Craig vehemently denied this and said to Entertainment Weekly: “Why would I ever both doing something like that? F---ing hell! Pfft. Play an extra in another movie?” When probed further on the matter, the actor said: “Talk to Simon Pegg. He obviously knows way more than I do. He’s just jealous because he’s not in Star Wars. He’s got some issue with JJ, I don’t know what the f--- it is. You need to talk to Simon about it.”
Craig had been shooting Spectre at Pinewood Studios, where The Force Awakens was also being filmed at the same time. Sources told Entertainment Weekly that Craig was able to shoot his cameo when filming for the latest Bond instalment.
For anyone who has not seen The Force Awakens, details of Craig’s cameo below contains some spoilers.
At one point in the film, Rey, played by Daisy Ridley, attempts a Jedi mind trick. “You will remove these restraints and leave this cell with the door open,” the scavenger tells a stormtrooper played by Craig.
The scene is a direct reference to Obi-Wan Kenobi’s mind trick in Star Wars IV: A New Hope, when he tells stormtroopers “these aren’t the droids you’re looking for”.
Sadly, Rey’s maiden attempt at a Jedi mind trick isn’t as successful as Obi-Wan’s, as Craig’s character – unrecognisable in stormtrooper helmet – responds: “I’ll tighten those restraints, scavenger scum.”
