Saoirse Ronan continues her assault on awards season with a BAFTA nomination for Best Actress for Brooklyn.

She's already in the running for Best Actress at the Golden Globes on Sunday night and Best Actress at the prestigious SAG awards and last week she was awarded Best Actress at the New York Film Critics Circle awards.

The 21 year old Dublin star is up against some tough competition in her category, however, with Alicia Vikander also nominated for her performance in The Danish Girl, Cate Blanchett for Carol, Maggie Smith for The Lady in the Van, and Brie Larson has been nominated for her performance in Lenny Abrahamson's Room.

The Outstanding British film category pits Brooklyn against Ex Machina, 45 Years, Amy, The Danish Girl, and The Lobster, some of which was shot in Ireland and stars Colin Farrell.

Michael Fassbender has bagged a nomination for his role in Steve Jobs.  He's up against Eddie Redmayne for The Danish Girl, Matt Damon, Bryan Cranston and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Irish author Emma Donoghue has also been announced as a contender in the Best Adapted Screenplay category for her screenplay for Room, the big screen adaptation of her best-selling novel.

Nick Hornby has also been nominated for Brooklyn.  The film is nominated in the Costume and Hair and Make-Up categories.
