Actor Gunnar Hansen who terrified as Leatherface in Texas Chain Saw Massacre has died aged 68

Gunnar Hansen, the actor best known for his role as Leatherface in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, has died aged 68.

Hansen, who was born in Iceland but grew up in America, died on Saturday at his home in Maine after battling pancreatic cancer.

The actor went to university in Texas and landed the iconic role in the classic horror just after finishing graduate school.

In Tobe Hooper's 1974 film he terrorised a group of young people as an inbred serial killer who wore a mask made of human skin on his face.

Gunnar played the role several more times including in the 3D remake of the original film. 

He also played roles in several other horror movies, many of which also featured chainsaws like Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers in 1988 and Chainsaw Sally in 2004.

As well as movies he wrote several screenplays, books and documentaries.
