Angelina Jolie has conjured up her most successful film to date as Maleficent crossed the $500m mark at box offices worldwide.

Disney's twisted retelling of the Sleeping Beauty fairytale, which stars the actress as the evil fairy Maleficent, has taken over 521.6 million US dollars (£306.6 million) around the world, with box office takings of 186 million US dollars (£109.3 million) in America.

This makes it the biggest live-action film of Angelina's career, surpassing Mr And Mrs Smith, which took in 478.2 million US dollars (£281.1 million) in 2005.

Maleficent also raced past Disney's live-action fairytale Oz: The Great And Powerful, which has grossed 493.3 million US dollars (£289.9 million) worldwide.

In the UK, Maleficent - which also stars Elle Fanning, Sharlto Copley and Sam Riley - has made around 25.7 million US dollars (£15.1 million). Its other top markets include the US, Mexico, Russia and Brazil, and it is expected to be a hit when it is released in Japan on July 4.

While Maleficent has enjoyed big-screen success, it dropped to third place in the UK box office ranking, with tear-jerking drama The Fault In Our Stars shining in top spot. The big-screen adaptation of John Green's novel stars Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort as cancer sufferers who fall in love.

22 Jump Street took second place, with X-Men: Days Of Future Past and Belle rounding up the top five.
