Mendes to direct Downey Jr in Oz?
Sam Mendes is in talks to direct Robert Downey Jr in a Wizard Of Oz spin-off movie.
The Oscar-winning director, who was tipped to direct the 23rd James Bond movie before it was put on hold, is "the front runner" for Oz The Great And Powerful, according to Production Weekly.
The film tells the story of how the wizard arrived in Oz as a young man with a travelling circus and became the charlatan wizard hiding behind the curtain.
Robert Downey Jr is said to be "circling" the lead role.
Disney has the rights to the project, previously titled Brick, Oz The Great And Powerful.
Joe Roth, who worked on Alice In Wonderland and Hellboy, is producing. Mitchell Kapner, of The Whole Nine Yards and Romeo Must Die fame, has written the screenplay.
